Finkenhag biotope network
Location: Orsbach Finkenhag along the German-Dutch border
Size: 1.4 hectares
Biotope/geography/geology: Grassland and hedgerow structure on the south-western edge of the Horbacher Börde on loess soils.
Conservation purpose: Biotope network system consisting of hedges, bushes, small oak groves and pollarded trees as well as grassland structures in the otherwise structurally poor, intensively farmed Bördeland landscape. Establishment of new orchards (2001 & 2007) with old varieties (e.g. Red Star Grenache, Rhenish Bean Apple, Countess of Paris, Aachen House Apple), breeding habitat for open land and field breeders: partridge, blackcap, whitethroat, blackcap, garden warbler, marsh warbler, yellow warbler, chiffchaff, willow warbler, lapwing, pheasant. Wintering area of the hen harrier.
Maintenance: extensive grazing with sheep, fruit and pollard tree care.
Funding: The NABU Aachen city association acquired the area between 1993 and 2000 with financial support from private donors and the "Aachener Revier" nature conservation program.
The creation of the orchard was funded by the City of Aachen (2001) and the Rhineland Regional Association (2007). It is maintained by the NABU nature conservation station in Aachen.
